The Knowledge: The London Stock Exchange typically use 3 or 4 letter codes for listed companies, which are referred to as EPIC codes; strictly the term EPIC is no-longer correct as it was renamed 'Tradable Instrument Display Mnemonics' (TIDMs) or Mnemonics, when they upgraded their computer systems in the late 90's. However with little exception, the term EPIC lives on.

The terms EPIC comes from the name of the London Stock Exchange central computer prior to 1996.

EPIC codes are typically formed with 3 characters, with the 4th character typically indicating a secondary market such as 'W' for warrants; please note that some companies have 4 character EPIC codes, such as Barclays PLC (BARC).

When using EPIC codes with timetotrade, please remember to use the full international ticker symbol; for example the EPIC BARC.L is entered for Barclays plc.
